New Zimbabwean president maintains political status quo

Zimbabwe’s new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has appointed a new Cabinet filled with ruling party members and military officials but no opposition politicians. The 22-member Cabinet includes Maj. Gen. Sibusiso Moyo as foreign minister and Chris Mutsvangwa, leader of Zimbabwe’s war veterans, as information minister. Moyo on Nov. 15 announced the military takeover that led 93-year-old Robert Mugabe to step down as president. Opposition officials and activists condemned the new appointments.

Emmerson Mnangagwa sworn in as Zimbabwe’s president

Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s former vice president, assumed his role as the country’s new president on Friday after Robert Mugabe resigned amid mounting pressure earlier this week. Mnangagwa is Zimbabwe’s second president since the country’s independence in 1980.
