Rockets halt at the Israel-Gaza border

Some calm returned to Israel on Tuesday morning after a night of heavy cross-border fire over the Gaza Strip. The fighting began early Monday when a rocket from the Hamas-controlled territory struck a home in central Israel and injured seven people. Israel responded with retaliatory strikes, injuring at least five Palestinians. Hamas announced an Egypt-brokered cease-fire Monday night, but the violence continued into the night. Israel said it arrested nine Palestinian suspects in an overnight raid.

Rocket attack strikes central Israel

A long-range rocket fired from the Gaza Strip injured seven people when it struck a house in central Israel on Monday. The rocket hit a home in Mishmeret, north of Tel Aviv, minutes after officials turned on air raid sirens, the Israeli military confirmed. Another rocket attack struck Tel Aviv a little more than a week ago. At the time, Israeli defense officials said a preliminary investigation suggested the rockets were fired by mistake.

Two U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan identified

The Pentagon identified two U.S. Army soldiers killed last week in combat in Afghanistan as Spc. Joseph P. Collette, 29, of Ohio, who was out of the 71st Ordnance Group, and Sgt. 1st Class Will D. Lindsay, 33, of Colorado, who was with the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). Both men were out of Fort Carson, Colo. The Pentagon said only that the two men died of wounds sustained during combat operations in Kunduz province. Four U.S.
