Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gave a defiant speech on Sunday—his first public address in six months—defending his harsh crackdown that has brought on nearly two years of civil war. Assad offered a “peace plan” that could include a new constitution, but gave no hint of stepping down.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez admitted that his cancer has returned and designated Vice President Nicolas Maduro as heir to the socialist dictatorship he has built as he flew to Cuba for further treatment.

The big debate here in India is over toilets vs. temples. India’s rural development minister, Jairam Ramesh, started it with a comment late last week that the country has more temples than toilets. The complaint was meant to emphasize the problem of public defecation and lack of sanitation, but the comparison outraged Hindu nationalist party leaders.
