Brexit options stall, May offers to step down

British lawmakers late Wednesday voted on eight possible alternatives to Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plan, but none secured a majority, extending the political gridlock ahead of the deadline for the country to leave the European Union next month.

Parliament seizes control of Brexit

British lawmakers voted late Monday to seize control of the Brexit process in a bid to end the stalemate over the country’s exit from the European Union. The lawmakers voted 329-302 to alter Parliament’s schedule, which will allow them to consider other Brexit paths besides the one presented by Prime Minister Theresa May. Parliament is expected to hold “indicative votes” Wednesday on a “soft Brexit,” in which Britain retains close economic ties with the bloc, or staying in the EU.

Anti-Brexit protesters call for second referendum

Hundreds of thousands of protesters crowded the streets of London over the weekend to demand a second referendum on Britain’s exit from the European Union. Demonstrators converged before the Parliament building waving EU flags and holding anti-Brexit signs. In the Spanish capital of Madrid, about 100 British nationals rallied against the planned exit.
