Extremist Islamist group in Syria rejects truce

UPDATE: BEIRUT (AP)—An al-Qaeda-inspired Islamist group has rejected the short holiday cease-fire proposed by the international peace envoy to Syria.

The envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, said the government in Damascus and some rebel leaders agreed to a four-day truce during the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which starts Friday.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP)—A diminished but resilient al-Qaeda, whose 9/11 attacks drew America into its longest war, is attempting a comeback in Afghanistan's mountainous east even as U.S. and allied forces wind down their combat mission and concede a small but steady toehold to the terrorist group.
