Terrorist attacks in Afghanistan leave dozens dead and injured

Monday marked the 100th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence, but two terror attacks on civilians have cast a pall on any celebration. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack Saturday night at a wedding ceremony in Kabul that left 63 people dead and 182 injured. And on Monday, 10 explosions in Jalalabad injured about 66 people.

Trump selects next intelligence chief

WASHINGTON—Joseph Maguire, a retired U.S. Navy vice admiral, will take over as acting director of national intelligence, President Donald Trump announced Thursday. Maguire, who currently heads up the National Counterterrorism Center, will replace outgoing Director Dan Coats. It is unclear whether the president will nominate Maguire to fill the role permanently.

What peace? Taliban sets off bomb in Kabul

Days after the Taliban and United States claimed to have made progress in peace talks, the extremist group carried out a major suicide attack in the Afghan capital of Kabul. The bomber detonated an explosives-filled car at a security checkpoint outside police headquarters, in the western part of the city, killing 14 people and injuring 145—many of them civilians.
