Kenya plans to close refugee camps over terror fears

International aid groups are blasting the Kenyan government for planning to shut down two refugee camps, including one of the world’s largest, without an alternative plan to house the more than 400,000 refugees currently living in the country.

The government already dissolved the Department of Refugee Affairs, which worked with humanitarian groups that help meet the refugees’ basic needs. But it has not announced when the camps will close.

Hundreds of African migrants drown journeying to Europe

Hundreds of African migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to illegally cross to Europe, according to reports from Somalia.  The tragedy comes as Turkey threatens to end a deal with the European Union that could be a start toward resolving the migrant crisis.

“It’s a painful tragedy which reminds us all how important it is for us to discourage our youth from embarking on such high-risk journeys,” Somalia’s president, prime minister, and speaker of Parliament said in a joint statement.

Islamic militants attack hotel in Somalia

The Somali-based terror group al-Shabaab is claiming responsibility for an attack in the country’s capital today that left at least 14 dead and many others wounded.

The attack at the SYL hotel in Mogadishu began when a suicide bomber ran his car into the security barricades and blew himself up. In the confusion that followed the explosion, four gunmen stormed the hotel entrance, opening fire on security guards and civilians. At least nine bystanders were killed, along with the five attackers.
