Cardinal sentenced to six years for child sex abuse

A judge sentenced Australian Catholic Cardinal George Pell on Wednesday to six years in prison for molesting two 13-year-old choir boys in the late 1990s. “In my view, your conduct was permeated by staggering arrogance,” Victoria state Judge Peter Kidd told Pell in court. Pell, the most senior Vatican official convicted of child sexual abuse, must serve a minimum of three years and eight months before he is eligible for parole, according to the judge’s order.

GOP senator tells of sexual assault in the military

WASHINGTON—Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., revealed in a Senate hearing Wednesday that a superior officer sexually assaulted her while she was in the Air Force. “My drive to fight against sexual assault in the ranks is not from the outside looking in … it is deeply personal,” she said during a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel hearing on sexual assault in the military.

Cardinal convicted of covering up abuse

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin on Thursday said he will offer his resignation to Pope Francis after a French court convicted him of failing to report child sexual abuse. The court in Lyon handed down a six-month suspended sentence against Barbarin for not alerting authorities of accusations against the Rev. Bernard Preynat between July 2014 and June 2015. In a brief statement, Barbarin expressed his “compassion” for the victims and said he will offer his resignation to the pope in a few days. Barbarin’s lawyer said he plans to appeal the conviction.
