As demonstrations continue this week across the nation in the death of two African-American men at the hands of police, much is riding on measurable change in the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they protect. On Wednesday, a grand jury decided not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of 43-year-old Eric Garner in Staten Island, N.Y.

Darren Wilson resigns from Ferguson Police Department

Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Mo., police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, has resigned his position, his attorney announced today.

“There’s no way in the world he can go back to being a police officer,” attorney Neil Bruntrager said earlier this week. Wilson had been on administrative leave since the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown, who was 18. Wilson said Brown attacked through his car window just before the shooting. A grand jury decided Monday not to indict Wilson on criminal charges in the death of Brown, who was unarmed.
