County clerk who defended marriage loses election

The Kentucky county clerk who became famous for standing up for Biblical marriage lost her bid for reelection Tuesday. Democratic challenger Elwood Caudill defeated Republican Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who spent several days in jail in 2015 for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. At the time, Kentucky marriage licenses included the clerk’s name, which Davis argued amounted to a stamp of approval. The state legislature later changed the license requirement to remove the clerk’s name.

There is a life-sized cardboard figure of Pope Francis in the gift shop of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall Visitor’s Center, where many a tourist took photos before the papal visit, and I am starting to think that that’s all there is to the man.

Vatican official disputes details of Kim Davis' meeting with the pope

A Vatican spokesman today downplayed the significance of the pope’s meeting with Kim Davis, saying her  supporters had “overblown” the encounter.

The official statement on the meeting, which took place on Pope Francis’ last day in Washington, D.C., comes two days after news of the incident broke. The Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, said he had to meet with Francis to get the full story before he could comment.
