NORTH KOREA: U.S. President Donald Trump, in a news conference in Japan, went against national security adviser John Bolton and other top officials, saying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “is a very smart man” who has not violated UN sanctions this month or launched ballistic missiles.

African nations test new malaria vaccine

Malaria remains one of the world’s leading killers, but a vaccine trial is offering new hope to communities that suffer most from the disease.

Malawi became the first country to implement a pilot program to dispense a malaria vaccine for children last week. Scientists with the U.K.-based GSK pharmaceutical company took 30 years to develop the vaccine. It trains the immune system to attack the malaria parasite, spread by the female Anopheles mosquito.

As floodwaters recede in cyclone-ravaged areas of southern Africa, the focus of relief efforts shifts to searches for family members and much-needed assistance for 2 million people affected by the disaster.

Aid workers in Mozambique are scrambling to address public health concerns in makeshift camps that already house 228,000 displaced people, with more on the way.
