Migrant rescue signals trouble for Italy, Libya

Some 600 migrants rescued at sea arrived Friday in Sicily, one of the largest influxes since Italy struck a deal with Libyan authorities to limit migrant smuggling. The German nongovernmental organization SOS Mediterranee rescued the migrants, including many unaccompanied minors, in seven operations over 36 hours. The number of people fleeing to Italy from Libya dropped dramatically over the summer after the Italian government provided local militias with equipment and money to stop migrant boats at sea.

Rescue groups in Libya’s northwestern city of Sabratha said thousands of migrants have been trapped in the smuggling hub as rival militia groups battled for control since mid-September. Officials said the clashes began after Italy struck a deal with two militia groups to stem migrant flows.

Earthquake in Italy kills two

Rescue workers continue to assist victims after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Italian resort island of Ischia near Naples late Monday. At least two people have died and 39 have sustained injuries. Television images showed several buildings and a church that had collapsed after the quake struck just before 9 p.m. local time. One elderly woman died inside the collapsed church, and rescue workers have spotted a second casualty in the debris.
