Africa on the brink of Ebola disaster

International | Transmission in the Congolese border city of Goma worries health officials

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo last week confirmed the active transmission of the Ebola virus in the densely populated city of Goma, increasing fears of a widespread, international outbreak.

Last week, one man died from the disease after traveling to Goma through northeastern Ituri, an area affected by the yearlong Ebola epidemic. His wife and 1-year-old daughter have now tested positive for the disease and are receiving treatment.

INDIA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday revoked semi-autonomous status for the Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir region, locking down the territory. Authorities placed local political leaders under house arrest.

India downgrades Kashmir’s autonomy

India’s Hindu-majority government on Monday issued a decree revoking the special autonomy status of a portion of the Muslim-majority Kashmir state. Authorities suspended internet services on cellphones, deployed additional troops, shut down schools, and banned public meetings in the region. Days earlier, the Indian government ordered tourists and Hindu pilgrims to leave.
