ITALY: The global toll of recorded deaths due to COVID-19 topped 400,000 and total confirmed cases passed 7 million over the weekend. The United States has nearly 111,000 confirmed virus-related deaths. Pope Francis warned, “Don’t cry victory too soon,” as Italy and other European nations reopened and the pontiff again recited prayers from his balcony at the Vatican.

Protests break out around the world as virus lurks

An Australian court granted a last-minute appeal to allow an anti-racism march in Sydney on Saturday despite concerns about the coronavirus. Demonstrators had already begun to gather outside Sydney’s Town Hall when the court ruled they could lawfully protest just 30 minutes before the march was scheduled to begin, The Guardian reported.

Hong Kong vigil defies government ban

Thousands of people lit candles and observed a minute’s silence at Hong Kong’s Victoria Park on Thursday in memory of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing. Demonstrators throughout the city chanted “Democracy now” and “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.” Other vigils in Taiwan and online marked the 31st anniversary of the Chinese government crackdown on pro-democracy activists.
