Dam failures flood Michigan town

About 10,000 people had to evacuate from communities along the Tittabawassee River in central Michigan on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, several feet of water covered some streets in downtown Midland, Mich., as the river rose to a record level of 34.4 feet, with more flooding expected throughout the day.

Typhoon ravages northern Philippines

Typhoon Vongfong damaged hundreds of homes, toppled trees, and left at least one person dead after striking the Philippines on Thursday. More than 145,000 people sought refuge in emergency shelters. Forecasters said the typhoon still poses a danger to low-lying and coastal villages before it blows out of the country’s northern region on Sunday.

Typhoon hits the Philippines

Typhoon Vongfong brought maximum sustained winds of 93 miles per hour when it struck the eastern Philippines on Thursday. The storm made landfall in the town of San Policarpo in the province of Eastern Samar. The government weather agency said it could cause potentially life-threatening coastal flooding as it sweeps north along the country’s chain of islands.
