China: Former Interpol chief confessed to bribery

Former Interpol President Meng Hongwei confessed to accepting more than $2 million in bribes through his positions in Chinese government, according to a Chinese court on Thursday. The No. 1 Intermediate Court in Tianjin claimed Meng expressed regret for his actions at a hearing where he read his confession. A guilty verdict is almost assured. Meng became president of Interpol in 2016 and served as the head of the international police organization until his sudden disappearance in China in September 2018.

Chinese president arrives in North Korea for talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping began a two-day formal visit to North Korea Thursday, becoming the first Chinese leader to visit the country in 14 years. The Chinese delegation includes Xi’s wife, Peng Liyuan, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and other officials. Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, welcomed the delegation with a 21-gun salute at the Pyongyang airport. About 10,000 people waved flags and chanted slogans, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.

Hong Kong leader issues another apology

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam apologized again on Tuesday for the controversial extradition bill that sparked huge protests and calls for her resignation. Lam said the bill will not be reintroduced during the current legislative session. Protesters had demanded the bill, which would make it easier to send criminal suspects to China, be formally withdrawn. Nearly 2 million people turned out for the last protest on Sunday.
