USA Gymnastics files for bankruptcy

USA Gymnastics filed for bankruptcy Wednesday in an effort to fight the loss of its Olympic status. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) announced in November it no longer wanted USA Gymnastics to oversee Olympic team training and selection because of its mishandling of numerous sexual abuse claims against team doctor Larry Nassar, who is in jail, effectively for life, after being found guilty of multiple charges of molesting young athletes under the guise of medical care.

The Roman Catholic Church in the United States is reeling after the Vatican last week abruptly directed its bishops to postpone plans to increase accountability in the clergy sex abuse crisis. A chorus of Catholic critics is calling the move another cover-up of abuse by the Catholic hierarchy.

Shake-up in U.S. gymnastics governance

The U.S. Olympic Committee is moving to replace USA Gymnastics as the governing body for the sport at the Olympic level. In an open letter Monday, USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland told gymnasts, “You deserve better.” Former gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar is serving a 40-year prison sentence for sexually abusing gymnasts in his care.
