Clint Bass was thrilled when his alma mater, Southwest Baptist University (SBU), offered him a job. He graduated from the private Christian school in 2000 and nine years later joined the faculty as church history professor. He and his wife (also an SBU graduate) settled in a modest brick house in small-town Bolivar, Mo., and joined the Baptist church across the street from the school.

When Chad and Melissa Buck mark milestones in their family, the couple celebrates progress some parents barely notice. Melissa teared up last year when she realized her daughter had started smiling in pictures: “That’s huge for her.”

It’s huge because the Bucks’ children began their lives in a very different home filled with abuse and neglect. The Michigan couple fostered and then adopted three siblings, ages 4 years to 18 months. They later fostered and adopted two more children, including a biological sibling of the first three.

In 1959, on the top floor of a Brooklyn apartment building, Don Wilkerson, 19, stood next to his brother David, 28, watching a heroin addict named Shorty and two others prepare to shoot up. David steadied a 16 mm camera. They planned to film the gritty reality of heroin addiction and take the footage around the country to raise awareness and support for their new ministry to addicts.
