BRAZIL: “This government will be a defender of the constitution, democracy, and of truth,” said incoming President Jair Bolsonaro after winning Sunday’s election. “This is a promise not of the party, a vain promise of man, it is a promise to God.” The former congressman’s victory marked a hard pivot right after the largest country in South America was overwhelmed by scandals on the left.

TURKEY: American Pastor Andrew Brunson gained his freedom Friday, with a Turkish judge sentencing him to three years in prison, but since he has already served time, he walks free, but as a convicted felon. The verdict likely paves the way for his return to the United States, but as many predicted, it will bring to a close more than two decades’ work in Turkey.
