How then do we wait?

That’s the question on this Election Day, as the most toxic presidential contest in modern American history finally draws to a close. For most Americans it’s also an ordinary day: Many got up early, took the kids to school, washed a load of laundry, went to work, planned dinner, and perhaps thought about a neighbor who needs a little help.

For Christians, that’s how it should be. Our ordinary callings carry on regardless of the extraordinary nature of this day.

Perhaps it’s an accidentally ironic theme for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., to promote a month ahead of the presidential election. This weekend the Gothic cathedral that’s hosted sobering presidential funerals and solemn wartime prayer services will invite pets and their owners to the outside steps of the church for a “blessing of the animals” conducted by clergy.

Hillary Clinton returned to the campaign trail this week after falling ill at a 9/11 service Sunday in New York City. The Democratic nominee’s physician said the candidate had a mild case of pneumonia, but Clinton’s near-collapse after her sudden departure from the event stoked ongoing speculation about her health.
