China death toll revised up

The official death toll in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, now stands at 3,869—a 50 percent increase from initial reports. Wuhan’s coronavirus headquarters blamed the undercount on deaths at home and at medical institutions outside its network. The revision, released Friday, raises China’s official total death toll to 4,632. Experts say Chinese officials are likely underreporting the number of deaths in the pandemic.

South Korea holds election despite pandemic

South Koreans wore face masks, checked their temperature, and disinfected their hands at 14,000 polling stations on Wednesday. Voter turnout hit a record 66 percent, including 26.7 percent who voted in advance, despite COVID-19 fears. The parliamentary election pits the ruling Democratic Party against the conservative opposition United Future Party.

Virus resurges in China

China on Monday reported its highest daily number of coronavirus cases in nearly six weeks. The National Health Commission confirmed 169 new cases as the country battles a second wave of COVID-19. Of those, 98 were people who arrived from other countries.
