The Weinstein Company board of directors fired CEO Harvey Weinstein on Sunday following reports the movie mogul habitually sexually harassed women and paid off those who accused him. A New York Times article last Thursday chronicled sexual harassment settlements Weinstein made with actresses and former employees at The Weinstein Company and Weinstein’s former film company, Miramax. The Times suggested Weinstein’s behavior was an “open secret” in Hollywood for years, but no one exposed it publicly because of the CEO’s power in the movie industry and politics. Weinstein films have won six Academy Awards for best picture. Actress Meryl Streep said Monday that not everyone in Hollywood knew the rumors about Weinstein’s behavior. “The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported,” Streep said in a statement. “The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.”
