Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said anti-government fighters who staged an attack Sunday on an army base would receive the maximum penalty, once officials find them. Juan Caguaripano said the group opposed Maduro’s government and described the attack as “a civic and military action to reestablish the constitutional order.” Maduro in his weekly broadcast on state television said the military killed two of the fighters, while 10 others escaped: “We know where they are headed and all of our military and police force is deployed.” The attack came as the country’s controversial new constituent assembly began its duties. Members of the assembly on Saturday voted to remove Attorney General Luisa Ortega, who opposed the assembly’s inauguration as fraudulent.
