Pilot error likely cause of Russian plane crash

Russian investigators said pilot error might have caused the crash of an airliner that killed 71 people Sunday. The pilots failed to turn on the heater that warms the measuring instruments, resulting in faulty readings during flight. The plane’s data recorder revealed incorrect speed information, which might have been why the pilots went into a 30- to 35-degree dive before crashing. The Saratov Airlines flight took off from Moscow Domodevo Airport and went down in a snowy field six minutes later.
