Miami officials on Friday ended the rescue operation and declared at least six people had died in the collapse of a pedestrian bridge near Florida International University on Thursday. Rescue workers used trained dogs and listening devices to search for survivors, but Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said Friday the operation changed to a recovery. Zabaleta confirmed the casualties and said responders initially hospitalized 10 people. The bridge had been under construction for less than a week and stretched nearly 200 feet to connect Florida International University with the city of Sweetwater. It was expected to open to pedestrian traffic and cyclists next year. MCM Construction Management, the company responsible for building the bridge, promised a complete investigation into the collapse. Florida Gov. Rick Scott said state authorities would investigate, too, and hold anyone responsible accountable.
