At least 100 migrants who went missing at sea Tuesday likely are dead, according to the Libyan navy. Rescue crews plucked at least 279 survivors from the water off the Libyan coast. All the missing migrants were aboard a rubber dinghy that capsized. The navy said it found the surviving migrants, mostly Africans, near the city of Zawiya after more than 12 hours of search and rescue efforts. Navy officials transported the survivors, including 19 women and 17 children, to Tripoli, Libya’s capital. More than 3,100 migrants died at sea in 2017, according to the United Nations migration agency. Earlier this week, the Italian coast guard said at least 64 migrants died Saturday after their boat sank off the Libyan coast.
