SeaWorld announced Monday that the last killer whale born in captivity at its parks died of pneumonia over the weekend. The waterpark stopped breeding orcas in 2016 after receiving widespread criticism of its treatment of the animals. Kyara was conceived before the program ended. The park said in a statement its staff worked tirelessly to treat the young whale before it succumbed to illness. Pneumonia is the most common cause of death of orcas and dolphins both in the wild and captivity, according to SeaWorld.

Just noting that Seaworld stopped breeding orcas "after receiving widespread criticism of its treatment of the animals" doesn't accurately portray what really happened. It leaves the impression that there was some widespread acceptance of the fact that this was true. But what really happened, of course, was that leftist animal rights groups raised enough of a stink that Seaworld finally succumbed, despite the lack of outcry from a vast majority of Americans. A more accurate phrase might have been, "after being subjected to a campaign by leftist animal rights groups and celebrities designed to end its ownership of orcas."
