Former President Jimmy Carter is recovering at his home in Plains, Ga., after undergoing emergency surgery for a broken hip. Carter was on his way to hunt for turkeys on Monday when he fell and fractured his hip. Doctors operated to repair it a short time later.
Deanna Congileo, the former president’s spokeswoman, said Carter is doing well. His “main concern … is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit. He hopes the state of Georgia will allow him to rollover the unused limit to next year,” she said in a statement.
Carter, 94, as of March, became the longest-living president in U.S. history and is otherwise healthy, Congileo said. Carter was diagnosed with melanoma cancer in his liver and brain in 2015. He received treatment for seven months until scans showed no sign of the disease.
