Deadly earthquake hits Indonesian island

A powerful earthquake Sunday in Indonesia has killed at least 14 people, injured more than 160 others, and damaged more than 1,000 homes. The 6.4 magnitude quake struck Lombok island, a popular tourist destination east of Bali, but its shallow depth, only 4.4 miles, created a greater danger because shallow earthquakes tend to do more damage than deeper ones. The quake caused widespread blackouts and triggered a large landslide from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano.
