California filed suit against the Trump administration on Wednesday to block it from building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra told reporters he filed the suit in federal court in San Diego and argued that construction of a border wall is unconstitutional and intrudes on California’s state authority. “They’re violating the 10th Amendment and infringing on a lot of state laws, not just federal laws, that affect our state,” Becerra said. “At the same time, they’re trying to do something that only Congress can do.” President Donald Trump promised as a candidate to build a border wall and vowed Mexico would pick up the tab, but the president cannot begin construction without approval from Congress. With Democrats opposed and some Republicans asserting a wall is unnecessary, Trump has yet to secure funding for the wall. Despite the roadblocks, the Trump administration has been gearing up for the build. The Department of Homeland Security granted contracts to eight companies to work on prototypes of potential barriers while Trump lobbies Congress. Becerra’s suit seeks to block the preparations.
