The California Assembly on Wednesday approved a bill to require all public universities in the state to offer abortion pills to students. None of the 34 University of California or California State University campuses currently offer abortions at their student health centers. Private donors have agreed to pay millions of dollars in startup costs to implement the requirement, which would take effect in 2022. Students for Life called the bill’s passage a tragedy. “Schools should be focused on educating the next generation, not ensuring that it’s easy to end the lives of future generations,” president Kristan Hawkins said in a statement.

The drugs mifepristone and misoprostol end early pregnancy by cutting off the pregnancy-sustaining hormone progesterone and sending the woman into labor. The California Senate has already approved the bill but must sign off on changes made in the Assembly.
