British lawmakers are preparing to vote on Tuesday on a revised Brexit deal negotiated by British Prime Minister Theresa May with the European Union ahead of Britain’s scheduled exit from the bloc. The new deal, announced late Monday, includes three additional legal documents that mostly address the Irish border portion of the agreement. Parliament rejected May’s initial deal in January over a “backstop,” which would not allow any border controls between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland. Lawmakers argued it could keep Britain tied to the bloc indefinitely, and the EU remained unwilling to reopen the agreement. “What we have secured is very clearly that the backstop cannot be indefinite, cannot become permanent,” May said.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, warned British lawmakers Monday evening that the agreement will be the last ahead of Britain’s exit scheduled for March 29: “Let us speak crystal clear about the choice. It is this deal, or Brexit might not happen at all.”
