Brazil elects populist president by a landslide

Fifty-seven million Brazilian voters propelled far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro to victory in the country’s presidential election Sunday. The populist defeated leftist Fernando Haddad by a little more than 10 percentage points. Bolsonaro built his winning coalition on promises to defeat rampant corruption and rising crime. U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Bolsonaro after his win. “We agreed that Brazil and the United States will work closely together on Trade, Military and everything else! Excellent call, wished him congrats!” Trump tweeted Monday. The 63-year-old Bolsonaro will take office Jan. 1.
