Support for border compromise in question

WASHINGTON—With a week to go until funding could lapse again for parts of the federal government, lawmakers may be nearing a border security agreement, but there is no guarantee President Donald Trump, who continues to insist on funding for a wall along the U.S. southern border, will sign off on it. “We’re on the verge of a government shutdown again,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley warned reporters Friday.

Nation readies for State of the Union

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump will speak to the nation in his second State of the Union address Tuesday evening. Despite the threat of another partial government shutdown in just 10 days, the president is expected to deliver an optimistic assessment of how the United States has fared under his leadership. He will likely point to a roaring U.S. economy, the passage of a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill, the replacement deal for the North American Free Trade Agreement, and strong jobs numbers. Trump is also expected to continue to make his case for a wall at the U.S.

Trump nominates new interior secretary

President Donald Trump on Monday announced his nomination of David Bernhardt to head the Department of the Interior. Bernhardt served as the agency’s acting chief since January, after Ryan Zinke resigned amid ethics investigations.
