Report: Rosenstein to resign from Justice Department

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will leave his position if William Barr is confirmed by the Senate and becomes the next attorney general, multiple news outlets reported Wednesday, citing anonymous sources. Barr’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled for next week, and he could be in the job by early February. Rosenstein reportedly plans to leave after that, though an end date has not been set.

Trump appeals to public as shutdown drags on

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump in his first Oval Office address Tuesday night declared that migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border represent a “humanitarian and national security crisis” and demanded Congress fund a wall. In his televised appeal to the American people, the president said the current flow of illegal immigration had overwhelmed the system, citing concerns of drug smuggling and human trafficking.

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump will speak to the nation from the Oval Office on Tuesday to make his case for building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. A dispute over funding the wall sparked a budget crisis and a partial government shutdown, now in its 18th day. If the shutdown stretches to this weekend, it will mark the longest in history.
