Tropical storm descends on Gulf Coast

Cristobal made landfall on the southeast Louisiana coast on Sunday, packing winds of 50 miles per hour. The storm was below hurricane strength as it moved inland, but forecasters cautioned its effects could stretch some 180 miles along the Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center said Cristobal will weaken into a tropical depression today as it moves across southeastern Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri before entering Canada on Wednesday.

Michigan flood displaces thousands

Floodwaters mixed with water from containment ponds at a Dow Chemical plant in Midland, Mich., after two dams failed along the Tittabawassee River on Wednesday. The company said the ponds just held water and posed no threat. The Environmental Protection Agency said state officials would evaluate the plant when possible. Officials did not report any injuries or deaths in the flood, but they asked about 10,000 evacuees not to return to the area yet. The National Weather Service said flooding could affect communities farther downstream from Midland in the coming days.

Dam failures flood Michigan town

About 10,000 people had to evacuate from communities along the Tittabawassee River in central Michigan on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, several feet of water covered some streets in downtown Midland, Mich., as the river rose to a record level of 34.4 feet, with more flooding expected throughout the day.
