ISIS claims Sri Lanka bombings

Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday suicide bombings of churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, where more than 300 people died in the violence. The attacks were “carried out in retaliation” for the last month’s shooting at two mosques in New Zealand that killed 50 people, Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene told Parliament on Tuesday. He blamed the security department’s “weakness” for failing to prevent the attacks.

Americans killed in Afghanistan bombing

A roadside bomb near the main U.S. base in Afghanistan killed three American service members on Monday, U.S. forces confirmed. The explosion occurred near Bagram Airfield, which serves as the major U.S. air facility in the country, the United States and the NATO Resolute Support mission said. Three other Americans and an Afghan contractor sustained injuries in the attack. The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying its suicide bomber detonated an explosive-filled car near the base.

Taliban attack Afghan security officials

The Taliban launched an attack early Thursday on a government compound in the western Badghis province of Afghanistan, killing at least 20 security officials. Intense fighting continued into Thursday afternoon, said Jamshid Shahabhi, the provincial governor’s spokesman. The casualties include soldiers and policemen. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack. The insurgent group has persisted with almost daily attacks on Afghan security forces despite ongoing peace talks. U.S.
