Players union challenges NFL anthem policy

The National Football League Players Association filed a grievance Tuesday against the national anthem policy adopted by the NFL in May. The union says the new policy, imposed without consulting the NFLPA, infringes on players’ rights and violates the union’s collective bargaining agreement with the league. The policy allows players to protest during the pregame playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by staying in the locker room but requires them to stand if they are on the field or the sidelines.

France advances to World Cup final

France finds itself in the finals of the World Cup for the first time since 2006, defeating Belgium 1-0 Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Russia. France’s Samuel Umtiti headed in a corner kick from teammate Antoine Griezmann in the match’s 51st minute to score the contest’s only goal. “It’s me that scored,” Umtiti said, “but we all delivered a big game.” France will take on the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Croatia and England in the finals on Sunday in Moscow.

World Cup semifinals set

The World Cup soccer tournament is down to its final four teams following this weekend’s quarterfinal matches. On Friday, France defeated Uruguay 2-0 and Belgium edged Brazil 2-1. On Saturday England shut out Sweden 2-0 while Croatia advanced in dramatic fashion, winning in a penalty kick shootout against the host team Russia. “Of course there’s power left for the English,” Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said of his team’s upcoming semifinal match in Moscow Wednesday against England. “We don’t want to stop.
