Republicans rebuke Trump for summit comments

House Speaker Paul Ryan and other high-profile Republicans responded with criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, saying Trump should have stood up to the Russian leader over the issue of election interference. At a joint news conference with Putin in Helsinki, Trump said he sees no reason why Russia would interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Putin also continued to deny that Russia tried to influence the election.

Pompeo, North Korea disagree on fruitfulness of talks

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday wrapped up two days of talks in Pyongyang with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, but the two sides offered conflicting reactions to the fruitfulness of the meetings. Before departing, Pompeo said the talks were “productive,” conducted in “good faith,” and that “a great deal of progress” had been made in some areas. But he added that “there’s still more work to be done” in other areas.

Protester charged after climbing Statue of Liberty

Police charged a woman with federal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and other offenses after she climbed up the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York on Wednesday, prompting authorities to shut down the monument. The woman, identified in reports as Therese Okoumou, had climbed from the monument’s pedestal to the feet of Lady Liberty, saying she was protesting the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Police coaxed her down after a standoff lasting about four hours.
