Pentagon to send 1,000 troops to Middle East

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration is sending 1,000 more troops to the Middle East in response to Iran’s “hostile behavior,” acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan announced Tuesday. “The recent Iranian attacks validate the reliable, credible intelligence we have received on hostile behavior by Iranian forces and their proxy groups that threaten United States personnel and interests across the region,” he said in a statement.

Report: U.S. to send 1,500 more troops to Middle East

UPDATE: The Trump administration told Congress on Friday it plans to send about 1,500 more troops to the Middle East to strengthen defenses against Iran, according to a notice obtained by media outlets. The number is substantially lower than the 10,000 or more suspected on Thursday as Pentagon and White House officials met to discuss the buildup. The troops’ mission would include protecting U.S. forces already in the region and ensuring freedom of navigation, the notice said.

U.S sends aircraft carrier to Middle East

The United States deployed an aircraft carrier and a bomber task force to the Middle East to respond to threats from Iran, U.S. national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday. The military sent the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region in response to “a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,” Bolton said, adding, “The United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime.
