Supreme Court allows transgender military policy, for now

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday said the Trump administration may immediately implement limits on transgender soldiers that President Donald Trump ordered in February 2018. In July 2017, Trump put on hold an Obama-era plan to allow transgender people to enlist in the military and to let those already serving do so as their preferred gender. Lower courts intervened and ordered the military to keep an open recruitment policy.

Trump announces space-based missile defense

The United States will develop a space-based missile defense system to protect against advanced weapons, President Donald Trump said Thursday at the Pentagon. The military needs the system because adversaries such as Russia and China are developing missiles that are harder to see, track, and defeat, said acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan, who also spoke at the Pentagon review. The president said the government will do what it takes “to ensure that we can detect and destroy any missile launched against the United States anywhere, any time, any place.”

Trump, Graham defend Syria withdrawal

President Donald Trump on Monday defended his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, tweeting that Islamic State (ISIS) was “mostly gone” and that withdrawing troops would fulfill campaign promises. The president announced on Dec. 19 that the United States would withdraw the remaining 2,000 troops from the war-torn country.
