Michigan will recognize 300 gay marriages from 2014

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced today the state will recognize about 300 same-sex marriages conducted last year before a judge ordered clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples.

Completing instead of competing

“We could write a story. It wouldn’t be that hard.”

With those words, our storybook began. Jonathan and I were sitting in the cushiony blueness of the downtown library, pages of our own illustrations scattered across our table. On this pre-engagement summer day, we were tackling one of our first joint creative projects: a children’s book featuring two kids on a seesaw who, consciously or not, represented us. And like us, they were writing a story together.

Judges stays Alabama marriage ruling

UPDATE (9:45 a.m. EST, Jan. 26): The judge who struck down Alabama’s marriage law Friday issued a stay of her decision for two weeks, giving the state time to appeal. The state will ask the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals if it will delay the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the Supreme Court rules on the topic this summer. If an appeal is not granted within two weeks, same-sex marriages can begin in Alabama.
