Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby defended the Anglican Communion’s actions against The Episcopal Church in a news conference Friday, highlighting violations of institutional protocol instead of a lapse in scriptural fidelity as the point of contention between the communion and the U.S. province that last year changed its canon on marriage to accommodate same-sex unions.

Anglican Communion suspends Episcopal Church

The Anglican Communion has temporarily suspended The Episcopal Church, restricting the activities of the American province over last year’s unilateral and “fundamental departure from the faith and teaching held by the majority of our provinces on the doctrine of marriage.” In an eight-point statement released Thursday, the 38 archbishops meeting this week in Canterbury said they sought unity in the face of ongoing deep differences.
