Kenyan floods kill more than 100 people

Seasonal rains in Kenya triggered floods that have killed at least 132 people since March, the Kenyan government said. Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the floods also displaced more than 200,000 people. At least 44 people died Thursday, including 20 children, and 40 others were declared missing after heavy rains caused a dam in Kenya’s Rift Valley to burst. Gideon Kibunja, Nakuru County police chief, said silt and water from the dam cleared away almost an entire village. Kenya battled a severe drought last year.

Death toll from Indian storm tops 100

A strong overnight storm in northern and western India killed at least 134 people and injured more than 160 others, Indian officials confirmed Thursday. The heavy rain and wind felled trees and power lines and destroyed houses. In the northern city of Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, the wind topped 80 mph. At least 43 people died in that city, said Sanjay Kumar, relief commissioner of Uttar Pradesh state. Kumar said another 64 people died and 67 others sustained injuries in Uttar Pradesh.

Russian mall fire kills 64 people

At least 64 people died Sunday in a fire that raged through a busy shopping mall in the Russian province of Siberia. Officials said the fire at the four-story Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo began Sunday and continued into Monday morning. Russian emergency situations minister Vladimir Puchkov confirmed the casualties after firefighters finished searching through the charred structure. Six bodies are yet to be recovered, he said. Another 10 people remain hospitalized with injuries.
