I am finding out that the big difference between magazine writing and blogging is the instant feedback. One could go for weeks, in the old days, before the message you floated in a bottle came back to you with curses or blessings --- and by that time "the bitterness of death is past," as Agag put it in 1 Samuel 15:32. That's if you even thought to check the mailbag at all.

God's man

Pastor and fellow blogger Rob Hadding recently asked me, along with several other men, what we think it means to be God's man. I like that formulation: God's man. I told him I'm not exactly sure what it means, to be God's man. If I look in the Bible for stories of men whom God called to himself, I find fools and quarrelers, buffoons and critics, self-righteous preeners, adulterers, murderers, betrayers. If these are the sorts of men God makes his own, then I am God's man.

Killing two birds with one stone

People can kill two birds with one stone. God can kill a million. The day I lost my teaching job, I thought it was all about me. It was a brilliant stroke on His part, with factors involved known only between God and me, and that would take too long to tell.
