Woman who threatened Denver schools found dead

An armed and dangerous woman who threatened Denver-area schools was found dead Wednesday after an extensive search, authorities said. According to the FBI, Sol Pais, an 18-year-old Miami Beach, Fla., high school student, was infatuated with the 1999 mass shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., that killed 13 people. She threatened violence just days ahead of Saturday’s 20th anniversary of the massacre. All classes and extracurricular activities for about a half-million nearby students were canceled Wednesday as a precaution.

Church arson suspect charged with hate crimes

Prosecutors on Monday filed new hate crimes charges against a 21-year-old accused of torching three historic African American churches in Louisiana. Holden Matthews pleaded not guilty Monday to starting the church fires, which occurred over several days starting March 26 in and around Opelousas, La. Matthews’ father is a local sheriff’s deputy who aided in the arrest after learning his son was a suspect, officials said.

Celeb lawyer Avenatti faces slew of charges

Federal prosecutors in California said Thursday they had indicted attorney Michael Avenatti on 36 counts of stealing millions of dollars from clients, tax evasion, bank fraud, and lying during bankruptcy proceedings. Avenatti, 48, was arrested last month in New York on unrelated allegations he tried to shake down Nike for up to $25 million.
