Marines charged with smuggling immigrants

During regular battalion formation at Camp Pendleton on Thursday, Marine Corps officers summoned 16 Marines in front of the ranks and arrested them. They face charges of smuggling undocumented immigrants across the border and unspecified drug-related offenses, according to a statement released by the Marine Corps. Eight other Marines were detained on suspicion of unrelated alleged drug offenses.

Judge denies Epstein bail

A federal judge on Thursday denied bail for financier Jeffrey Epstein on sex-trafficking charges after prosecutors argued he was a danger to the public and could try to flee the country. Epstein will remain in prison while contesting charges that he exploited dozens of girls as young as 14 in New York and Florida in the early 2000s. Epstein’s lawyers had asked for house arrest with a pledge of $559 million in assets as collateral.

A New York moment: 

At my church on Sunday, a deacon prayed for immigrants who might be feeling fear about the sweeping immigration raids that President Donald Trump had announced would begin that day. We do have immigrants in our church, so it was a simple sentence-long prayer for anyone feeling anxious.
