A jury in Pittsburgh acquitted a white former police officer Friday in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager who fled during a traffic stop of a car that had been involved in a drive-by shooting minutes earlier.

Purported New York crime boss shot dead

A man federal prosecutors say was a top leader of New York’s notorious Gambino crime family was shot and killed Wednesday on Staten Island. Francesco Cali, 53, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at his home just after 9 p.m. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Gambino organization, related through marriage to members of the Sicilian Mafia. Police have not arrested anyone in connection with his death.

Ringleader of college admissions scam pleads guilty

The central figure in a widespread college admissions scandal pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges that included conspiracy to commit racketeering, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. William “Rick” Singer, founder of the Edge College & Career Network in Newport Beach, Calif., said he intends to cooperate with prosecutors.
