Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

President Donald Trump, in a prime-time announcement to the nation Monday, announced he is nominating Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump called Kavanaugh “a judge’s judge,” citing his “proven commitment to equal justice under the law.”

The day after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, advocacy groups began running ads.

“President Trump has proven that he wants the best of the best on the Supreme Court,” the narrator said in a Judicial Crisis Network ad that urged viewers to call their senators. “And with your help, America will get another star on the Supreme Court.”

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the swing vote in many important cases on a sharply divided Supreme Court, has announced he will retire on July 31. 

The Wednesday announcement set off a political earthquake that will dominate Washington in the coming weeks. Minutes after the news broke, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., went to the Senate floor to announce, “We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor this fall.”
