Summer is the purview of childhood—long, hot days, goofing off in the swimming pool, Coke and popcorn at the movie theater. The felicity of adulthood is finding a film worth the cost of the overpriced concessions. With the release of Epic, the latest animated feature from the makers of Ice Age and Horton Hears a Who, at least one flick fits the bill. 

From time to time, a faith-based movie comes out in limited release. Christians understand the power of numbers and feel obligated to support the film, despite its artistic weaknesses.

Such is the case with King’s Faith, a PG-13 flick highlighting the struggles of Brendan King (Crawford Wilson), a young man aging-out of the foster care system with a drug and juvenile detention record.

The clock ran out on the hit Fox television series 24 two years ago, but according to a May 13 announcement from Fox executives, it’s time to get things ticking again. 

The counter-terrorism show, starring Kiefer Sutherland as special agent Jack Bauer, originally premiered in November 2001. America was still reeling from the 9/11 attacks and the “Zero Dark Thirty” raid was years away. 

In 1947, six Scandinavians, led by Thor Heyerdahl, sailed 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific in a raft to prove that pre-Columbian South Americans could have settled Polynesia. The movie Kon-Tiki (PG-13) tells the story.

Directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Pål Sverre Hagen as Heyerdahl, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film, and for good reason. Panoramic scenery, well-plotted moments of suspense, and a powerful performance from Hagen make this explorer’s tale worth watching. 

Award-winning movies don’t always live up to their billing. Such is the case with British filmmaker Ken Loach’s lastest offering, The Angels’ Share—winner of awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Billed as a comedic tale of misplaced talent and unlikely redemption, the movie focuses on the life of young Glasgow miscreant Robbie (Paul Brannigan), whose violent temper and drug habits landed him in prison.

The PG-13 film tells the story of a young couple—Brice (Lance Gross) and Judith (Jurnee Smollett-Bell)—who grow up together, fall in love, and get married at a young age.
