ASHEVILLE, N.C.—When the North Carolina legislature in March enacted HB2, better known as “the bathroom bill,” which requires individuals to use the restroom that corresponds with the sex on their birth certificate, the mainstream media exploded with reports of a boycott against the state.

Several musicians, in solidarity with the LGBT community, canceled concerts and PayPal suspended its decision to expand to North Carolina.

In Russia, missionary Justus Walker is dubbed “The Merry Milkman,” an apt nickname for the bearded dairy farmer with an exuberant laugh.

Walker’s Russian adventure began at age 11. In 1994, heeding God’s call to missions, his parents sold their Idaho home, packed up their four kids and moved them across the globe to Siberia. They planned to serve for a few years before returning to life in Idaho. Early on, Walker decided he’d study computer engineering at a Christian university.

God had other plans.

ASHEVILLE, N.C.—On a recent, warm September afternoon, conductor Wes Janzen called out directions to 42 musicians and singers with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (KSOC) as they rehearsed for the evening’s performance at Trinity Episcopal Church. It was their 17th show on a 39-city tour of the eastern United States.

During the past year, WORLD received more than 100 self-published books for possible review. This past May we had our 14 students at the 2015 World Journalism Institute each choose the books that most appealed to them—and from those to choose one to review. For the WJI students, that’s useful experience for future work in publishing or book reviewing. For the authors who sent their books, thank you. Although some of you will be disappointed not to find your book reviewed here, you have helped in the training of these budding journalists.
