Texas moves to pull Planned Parenthood funding

Texas will no longer send $3.1 million of Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood, according to a letter sent to the organization Wednesday.

The letter, from Texas Health and Human Services Commission Inspector General Stuart Bowen, gave Planned Parenthood 30 days’ notice before the state shuts off funding.

Court upholds conviction of right-to-die group

A Minnesota appeals court upheld the conviction of a national right-to-die group today for assisting a woman with her 2007 suicide. 

Final Exit Network had appealed the May 2015 decision of a judge to fine the group $30,000 for providing instructions to Apple Valley resident Doreen Dunn on how to commit suicide by helium asphyxiation. 

Minnesota law states anyone who “advises, encourages, or assists another in taking the other’s life” can be sentenced to 15 years in jail and a fine of up to $30,000.

Ohio makes assisted suicide a felony

Ohio tightened its restriction on assisted suicide Monday, joining four other states that have passed similar legislation in the last five years.

Gov. John Kasich signed HB 470, a palliative care bill with an amendment that makes assisted suicide a third-degree felony punishable by five years in prison. Ohio already allowed courts to issue injunctions against anyone assisting others to kill themselves.
