California storm snarls post-Christmas travel

Southern California had a white Christmas a day late, closing major highways on one of the busiest travel days of the year. A winter storm system moved across the Southwest, bringing snow, ice, and a tornado to the region.

Mississippi minister moved by decorated pothole

“O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, how lovely is thy pothole?” A McComb, Miss., man decided to add a bit of holiday cheer to a pothole in the middle of a city street by erecting a wiry tree on top of the traffic cone marking the damaged pavement. After other residents added decorations and presents to John Drummond’s tree, the Rev. Leon Hitchens of Webb Chapel Church wrote a song about it. “If a man can take a pothole and bring the whole world together, the question is what are you doing to spread the Christmas joy?,” asks the lyrics to “Pothole Christmas Tree.”

Washington crosses the Delaware

Gen. George Washington and his Continental Army troops faced freezing rain, snow, and high winds when they crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776, but reenactors found fair weather on Christmas Day this year. The event celebrating a turning point in the American Revolution drew an estimated 5,000 people to the river’s banks in Washington Crossing, Pa., and Titusville, N.J., after organizers canceled the crossing the previous two years because of bad weather.
